“Wolobougou”, meaning “the place of compassionate birth” in Bambara, is the name of a rural maternity clinic founded by midwife Honorine Soma in Burkina Faso. In a region with limited access to healthcare, she supports women, trains a new generation of midwives and empowers them to become independent. The film offers a moving portrait of a woman whose commitment turns every birth into an act of dignity and hope.

Camille Varenne is a French filmmaker and programmer whose documentary work explores feminist, social and decolonial issues. Following “Wéfo” (2015), “Pedra e Poeira” (2018) and “Blakata” (2019), she directed “Wolobougou”, continuing her sensitive exploration of contemporary Burkina Faso. Her films have been screened at several international film festivals.
